All ITS World Congress delegates will be offered a free SL travel pass throughout the days of the Stockholm event. More information about this will be sent together with the registration confirmation.

Use our homepage to discover more about SL www.sl.se. You find a map over the Metro, local trains and commuter trains by using the following link.

Metro

The Stockholm Metro is almost 110 km long and consists of three lines, the green, red and blue. Subway stations are marked with a blue T. The Stockholm Metro has been called the world´s longest art exhibition, since so many stations are richly decorated, particularly along the blue line. A comprehensive guide is available at the SL-Center and from tourist offices (guided tours are arranged regularly).

Buses

In the city centre the ordinary red buses have recently been joined by several even more modern blue main lines. Many buses use fuels that are easy on the environment, such as ethanol. Please note that you cannot pay with cash onboard the buses. Buses are a great way to discover Stockholm.

Commuter trains

The commuter rail system serves the entire county, from Märsta in the north to Nynäshamn in the south. The stations are marked with a big J. All southbound commuter trains pass the Central Station and the Stockholm International Fairs.

Plan your journey

You can plan your journey using our internet-based Journey Planner, which is available in Swedish and English. This provides you with suggested routes between the various stations/stops or addresses. In your route suggestion, you can see a map of where you are starting from or travelling to and of the entire journey. You can also search directly from the map. Visit www.sl.se to learn more about the journey planner. For inquiries, call information, +46-(0)8-600 10 00.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Ticket sales

All ITS World Congress delegates will be offered a free SL travel pass throughout the days of the Stockholm event.

You can buy additional travel cards and single tickets/pre-paid single tickets in advance at SL Center or ticket agents.

SL Centers are located in the ticket hall of the T-Centralen station at Sergels Torg and at the Central Station in the lower hall. You also find SL Center at the metro stations Slussen, Gullmarsplan, Fridhemsplan, Tekniska Högskolan, and in Täby Centrum.

Other ticket agents, mostly news agents, have the SL logo clearly visibly displayed.

You can always buy single tickets at the manned barrier when you travel, except when you travel by bus. You need to buy a ticket before you board the bus. At some larger bus stops and at the bus terminals you can buy single tickets from a ticket machine.

For inquiries, call information, +46-(0)8-600 10 00 or visit www.sl.se.

Catching the bus

Board the bus through the front doors and show your ticket to the driver. Please not that you cannot pay with cash onboard the buses. The ticket must be purchased in advance. At certain locations in Stockholm’s city centre there are inspectors that admit passengers through the rear doors too. When you wish to disembark, push the ‘stop’ button. The word ‘Stannar’ (stopping) lights up in the display on the bus. On Stockholm city centre blue buses you must also push a button to open the doors. This button is placed on a pole next to the door.

Taking the Metro and the commuter trains

There is a manned barrier and automatic barriers for those with cards at almost all of the stations. At some of the smaller stations there are no barriers at all. You must buy a ticket from the ticket machine if you do not already have one. All Metro and commuter trains stop at all stations along the line.

Taking the local trains

There are no barriers on the Roslagsbanan, Saltsjöbanan, Lidingöbanan, Tvärbanan and Nockebybanan trains. Instead there are ticket inspectors onboard these trains. This also applies on the commuter trains between Nynäshamn and Västerhaninge, and between Gnesta and Södertälje. Show your ticket to the conductor.

If you are taking the Lidingöbanan, Tvärbanan, or Nockebybanan trains you must use the ‘stop’ button to stop the train at your desired station.

A few tips!

If you are travelling with a child in a pram or pushchair, you can ride the buses free. An enjoyable alternative means of getting to Djurgården is to take museum tram no 7 from Norrmalmstorg. Take the opportunity to visit some of the exciting museums along the route. On some departures, you can enjoy a cup of coffee in a rolling café.

SL - Stockholm Public Transport

To travel together is to protect the environment and travelling with SL is easy Every day, more than 700 000 people travel with SL. We have the overall responsibility for ensuring that the County of Stockholm has a well-functioning public transport system.

You can travel with SL throughout the County of Stockholm. The area covers a distance of several kilometers outside the actual city centre and includes all services on the Metro, commuter trains, suburban railways such as the Roslagsbanan, Saltsjöbanan, and the Lidingöbanan trains, and hundreds of bus lines.

It is SL’s responsibility to develop and find new solutions for the public transport system. It is also SL that procures the services and ensures that the contractors running these services keep to their agreements. SL is currently a relatively small organization with just over 500 employees. But the SL service provides over 10 000 people with jobs.

SL is constantly working to create a cost effective public transport system of a higher quality and with a better capacity, which we hope will lead to more and more people choosing SL instead of their cars. This would benefit the people, animals and nature of Stockholm.

Wind on the track

The entire SL rail traffic is today powered by renewable electricity from wind and water power. The electricity delivered to the underground and the local lines also fulfils the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s criteria for “Good Environmental Choice”. As a consequence, SL’s rail traffic emits small amounts of greenhouse gases and your underground trip results in about 30 000 times less carbon dioxide than a corresponding trip by car.

Thus, all Stockholmers, who daily choose to travel by the rail services, contribute in that way to Stockholm having one of the world’s most environment friendly public transport systems.

Green in the tank

Bus traffic represents a large and important link in SL’s activities. The negative environment and health impact of the buses is therefore highly prioritized in our environmental work.

Today, we concentrate on renewable fuels in the form of ethanol and biogas. As opposed to petrol and diesel these fuels contribute to lower net emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. We have also introduced new hybrid buses which are expected to lower fuel consumption and emissions.

Public Transport
Reaching Stockholm International Fairs by Public Transport
SL is the Public Transport Authority of Greater Stockholm. It provides regional commuter train services Metro, local trains (except the Arlanda Express), trams, light rails and buses - and you can travel it all with one ticket. SL gives the environmental work high priority and tries new solutions that may reduce our environmental impact. Already today, we offer our travellers a public transport that is among the most environmentally friendly in the world. We push on the development towards a long-term sustainable progress of the Stockholm region.

All ITS World Congress delegates will be offered a free SL travel pass throughout the days of the Stockholm event. So, please feel welcome aboard.
